Where Calgary actually wants your donations right now

Space Savers · Calgary, AB

Every season, Calgary donation centres end up short on some items and swimming in others. Showing up with the wrong things wastes their time and your gas — here's a rough guide to what's actually useful.

What Calgary charities typically need most

  • Winter coats and boots (adult sizes especially). Every fall Calgary's shelter organizations put out calls, and demand consistently outstrips donations.
  • Household basics for people moving out of shelters — pots and pans, cutlery, plates, towels, bedding, small appliances. Organizations like WINS (Women in Need Society) place a lot of these into transitional housing.
  • Toiletries and cleaning products (unopened). Food banks and shelters run through these constantly and often can't afford them.
  • School supplies in August. Backpacks, lunch containers, notebooks — every year, every fall.
  • Building materials in good condition. Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes doors, cabinets, tile, lighting, and unused paint. This is one of the few places usable renovation leftovers can land.

What almost nobody takes anymore

  • Used mattresses — almost universally rejected due to bedbug and hygiene concerns
  • Older CRT televisions — recycling, not donation
  • Cribs and car seats — safety regulations mean most centres can't resell them
  • Broken small appliances — donation centres aren't repair shops
  • Encyclopaedias, VHS tapes, and cassette collections
  • Damaged or stained upholstery

Call ahead for the big items

Furniture donation policies change often and depend on space. A phone call before you load the truck saves a wasted trip — most organizations will tell you honestly whether they can use what you have.

The condition test

Would you give this item to a friend without apologizing for it? If yes, donate it. If you'd feel the need to say "it just needs a good clean" or "the leg just needs tightening" — that's a no.

If you have a whole house of things

Sorting, hauling, and delivering donations across multiple Calgary organizations is genuinely time-consuming — often the slowest part of clearing an estate or downsizing. This is a thing cleanout companies do as part of the job: usable items get routed to donation, everything else is handled in the same visit.
