How to get rid of old appliances in Calgary

Space Savers · Calgary, AB

Old appliances are the awkward middle child of junk: too heavy to move yourself, too big for the garbage, and — in the case of anything with refrigerant — regulated so they can't just go anywhere. Here are your realistic options in Calgary.

Option 1: retailer haul-away

If you're buying a replacement, most major appliance retailers will remove the old unit on delivery for a modest fee (sometimes free during promotions). This is the easiest path if the timing lines up and the old unit is disconnected and ready. It doesn't help with the extra freezer in the basement that isn't being replaced.

Option 2: city disposal

City of Calgary landfills accept appliances from residents. Refrigerant-containing units — fridges, freezers, air conditioners — carry a fee for certified refrigerant removal, because the coolant is an ozone-depleting substance that must be evacuated by law before recycling. You need a way to transport the unit, which is where this plan usually falls apart for anyone without a truck and a strong friend.

Option 3: scrap metal recyclers

Appliances are mostly steel, and some scrap dealers accept them — occasionally paying a small amount for clean loads. Refrigerant units still need the coolant professionally removed first, and again, you're doing the hauling.

Option 4: junk removal

One phone call, no lifting, and the disposal routing is handled — working units to donation where possible, the rest to metal recycling with refrigerant properly evacuated. This is the option people choose when the appliance is in a basement, the timing doesn't match a new delivery, or there's more than one item to move.

Whichever route you choose

  • Empty and defrost fridges and freezers a day ahead — a defrosting freezer in a moving truck is a bad time
  • Disconnect gas stoves and dryers properly; if you're not confident doing it, that's a plumber or gas fitter's fifteen minutes, not a guess
  • Measure doorways before assuming the path out is the path it came in — homes get renovated around appliances more often than you'd think
