The spring garage cleanout: a Calgary ritual worth doing right

Calgary garages take a beating from October to April. Bikes get buried behind snow tires, gravel and road salt coat the floor, and everything that needed a home in a hurry got one: the garage. By the time the chinooks turn permanent, the space needs a proper reset — not just a sweep.

Why spring is the moment

Two practical reasons. First, the seasonal swap has to happen anyway — snow tires out of the way, summer gear forward — so you're touching everything once regardless. Second, it's the season Calgary's donation centres and community giveaway pages are busiest, meaning your usable castoffs actually find homes fast in spring.

The one-day method

1. Empty it — actually empty it. Everything onto the driveway. This is the step people skip and the reason garage cleanups fail; you can't sort what you can't see, and shuffling piles inside the garage is just rearranging.
2. Sort into three zones: back in, donate/sell, and gone. Be ruthless with the third zone — dried paint, the broken shovel, the fourth cooler.
3. Clean the empty shell. Sweep out the winter sand, hose the floor if you can, and knock down the cobwebs. Ten minutes, huge difference.
4. Return things by frequency. Weekly-use items at hand height near the door; seasonal items up high or at the back. Snow gear goes to the least convenient spot — you won't need it for months. Hopefully.

The volume problem

The sorting is the fun part; the "gone" pile is where the day stalls. A quarter of a garage of junk doesn't fit in a sedan, and it definitely doesn't fit in the black bin. That's the piece worth handing off — a crew takes the discard and donation piles in one load, and the project actually finishes the day it started instead of living on the driveway for two weeks.

Keep it won

The garages that stay clean share one habit: nothing gets put down "for now." A designated shelf for outgoing donations helps too — when it fills, it goes. Do that, and next spring is an hour's touch-up instead of a full reset.
