Is your storage locker worth what you're paying for it?

Space Savers · Calgary, AB

Here's a math problem nobody likes doing: a mid-size storage unit in Calgary runs somewhere around $150–$300 a month. Keep it for three years and you've paid $5,000–$10,000 — often to store things worth a fraction of that. If that stings a little, this post is for you.

The honest test

Ask yourself two questions about what's in the unit. First: have you needed anything from it in the last twelve months? Second: if the whole unit vanished tomorrow, what specifically would you replace? Most people can name two or three items — and those items would fit in a closet.

Why lockers are so hard to let go of

Storage units run on inertia. The monthly fee is small enough to ignore, the contents are out of sight, and dealing with it feels like a whole weekend you don't have. So it renews, month after month, sometimes for years. The storage industry is built on exactly this pattern.

Three ways out

  • Full cleanout. Everything goes — sorted for donation and recycling, the rest disposed of. One visit, then you hand back the keys and stop the bleeding entirely.
  • Keep-pile cleanout. You meet the crew at the unit for twenty minutes, point out what you actually want, and it gets delivered back to your home. Everything else goes.
  • Downsize. If some contents genuinely earn their keep, clearing half the unit lets you move to a smaller, cheaper one.

What a locker cleanout looks like

They're usually the fastest job we do. Units are compact, access is drive-up or dolly-friendly, and there's no house to navigate. Most lockers are cleared in an hour or two. You don't have to be there for the whole thing — many customers meet us at the start, flag anything to keep, and leave.

One tip before you book

Check your facility's move-out policy. Most require notice before the end of the month — if you clear the unit on the 2nd but needed to give notice on the 31st, you may pay an extra month. Time the cleanout for the week before your billing date and you'll exit clean.
