What junk removal can and can't take in Calgary
The short version: almost everything in a typical garage, basement, or house can go on a junk removal truck. But a handful of items can't — usually because Alberta regulates their disposal — and knowing which is which before cleanout day saves everyone time.
What we can take
- Furniture — couches, mattresses, dressers, tables, anything
- Appliances — including fridges and freezers (refrigerant items may carry an extra disposal fee)
- Electronics — TVs, computers, printers, which get routed to e-waste recycling
- General household goods, clothing, toys, books, dishes
- Yard waste, fencing, and most renovation debris like drywall and lumber
- Scrap metal, bikes, exercise equipment, tools
- Hot tubs, sheds, and trampolines — usually with disassembly
What generally can't go on the truck
- Household chemicals — paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, automotive fluids
- Propane tanks and fuel — even empty tanks are pressurized vessels
- Asbestos-containing material — common in pre-1990 homes (vermiculite insulation, some flooring and ceiling textures); this requires licensed abatement, not junk removal
- Ammunition and firearms — contact local police for safe disposal
- Medical/biohazard waste
Where the "can't take" items go
Calgary makes this easier than most cities. City landfill locations accept household hazardous waste — paint, chemicals, propane tanks — from residents at designated drop-offs, typically free for household quantities. Pharmacies take back expired medications. For suspected asbestos, get a licensed abatement company to test before anyone disturbs it — that one is genuinely not a do-it-yourself situation.
A note on "grey area" items
Tires, large quantities of concrete or soil, and pianos are usually takeable but priced separately because they're heavy or have special disposal streams. Mention them when you get your quote so the number you're given is the real one.
