Where to donate furniture and household goods in Calgary
Most people clearing out a space want the same thing: for usable stuff to end up with someone who needs it, not in a landfill cell. Calgary has good options for this — but each organization has its own rules about what it takes, and showing up with the wrong items wastes everyone's time. Here's the lay of the land.
The major players
- Goodwill — clothing, housewares, books, electronics, and smaller furniture at donation centres around the city. Proceeds fund employment programs.
- Women in Need Society (WINS) — a Calgary-based organization taking furniture, housewares, and clothing; donations directly support local families.
- Salvation Army Thrift Stores — furniture, clothing, and household goods; some locations offer pickup for larger items.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — the place for building materials, cabinets, appliances, and furniture; proceeds build affordable housing.
Policies, hours, and pickup availability change, so check the organization's website before loading the truck.
What almost nobody accepts
Learn this list and save yourself a wasted trip: stained or torn upholstery, most used mattresses, older CRT televisions, cribs and car seats (safety regulations), and anything broken "but fixable." Donation centres aren't repair shops — if it doesn't work today, it's recycling or disposal, not donation.
The condition test
One question: would you give this item to a friend without apologizing for it? If yes, donate it. If you'd feel the need to say "it just needs a good clean" or "the leg just needs tightening" — that's a no.
If you have a whole houseful
Sorting, hauling, and delivering donations across multiple organizations is genuinely time-consuming — it's often the slowest part of clearing an estate or downsizing. This is a thing cleanout companies do as part of the job: usable items get sorted and delivered to donation as the space is cleared, and everything else is handled in the same visit.
